In Europe and the United States, posters from many fields have long been collected and even celebrated in dedicated poster museums. By contrast, most Japanese commercial posters were discarded after use. However, in recent years, more Japanese universities and art museums have begun to focus on collecting and preserving these cultural artefacts.
This book presents a carefully curated selection of Japanese commercial posters produced between the Meiji era and the end of the Second World War (Shōwa 20).
