The goshiki no fukinagashi consists of five long, colourful streamers—often in blue, red, yellow, green, and purple or white—representing the five elements in Japanese tradition (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water) or the Five Virtues from Confucianism (benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and fidelity). These streamers are a significant part of the decoration and are thought to bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits for children.
